What being a Mental Health Society Volunteer means?
Volunteering is about giving your time to partake in activities that benefit others. This means that a lot of people are involved in things and they don't even realise they are volunteering! People think if you are enjoying yourself you can't be volunteering. WRONG! Volunteering can be great fun!
Volunteer experiences often put you in a different environment and expose you to people and situations that you wouldn't have come across in your regular life. It feels good to be able to meet a person’s need, so no matter what you may be doing as a volunteer remember one important thing:
“You make a difference in the world”.
Why Become a Volunteer?
There are many reasons to become a volunteer: the desire to help, to use one's knowledge for something good, to live a new experience, to overcome challenges, to acquire abilities, to establish social relationships, to get practice or contribute to the common good. But once you begin, the joy of volunteering and the interaction with those you are helping will be more than sufficient reason to keep you coming back.
Volunteering can add a great deal to your life and the lives of those for whom you volunteer. It offers you a chance to become involved in a project or with an organisation you really care about as well as an opportunity to meet new and like-minded people. It also gives you the chance to try out something different to your everyday job, which may lead on to new career options.
Community groups and organisations benefit from the input of volunteers by gaining a new and valued perspective on their work as well as the precious resource of time. Even a small commitment can have a lasting effect on an organisation and the people it represents.
